The New Zealand government recently announced an additional employer-paid one-off public holiday on Monday, 26 September 2022, to mark the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England.

Key details

The one-off public holiday allows all individuals and corporations in New Zealand to pay their respects and commemorate the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

All employees (public and private sectors) are entitled to take time off on paid (average daily pay) public holidays. Employers may request their employees to work on a public holiday, but employees may refuse such requests. Employees are required to work on public holidays only if agreed upon hiring in their employment contract. Employees who work on a public holiday, are entitled to 150% of their salary on that day.
